Sterilizations were on the rise during president Fujimori’s birth control programs; most of these occurred during 1996 and 1997 after its legalization in 1995.

In 1995, 15,000 sterilizations were performed.  This rose to 67,000 in 1996 and 115,000 in 1997.  The Ministry of Health estimates that at least 277,793 women were sterilized during this campaign.
