Fujimori fled to Japan in light of accusations against him for multiple human rights’ violations.

Unfortunately, the actions taken against these women were overshadowed by the tactics President Fujimori was utilizing in order to defeat the Shining Path terrorist organization.

While Fujimori was in Japan, the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission was set-up to investigate his alleged crimes against humanity between 1980 and 2000.

The Commission reported 68,841 people were “disappeared” during this time.  Of these, 90% were from the poorest regions of the country and over 70% were native Quechua speakers.,

The disappearances were clearly targeting the poor, indigenous population.  However, there was no mention of sterilizations in the report.
