While the use of artificial contraceptives was going down, the number of abortions was on the rise; the Ministry of Health reported that the number of complications treated due to unsuccessful abortions in its clinics was 38,851 in 2002, 41,993 in 2003, up from 35,000 in 2000 and 2001.
