The first key finding of this FFFIP program is that few evaluations result in a field problem investigation or CPIP.  In the last 5 years of the program less than 5% of the investigations have led to field problem investigations or CPIPs.  The second key finding of this program is that most of the SCBAs evaluated are not maintained very well.  The exhalation valves in the facepieces or second stage regulators are usually dirty.  Mating o-rings have not been lubricated and the overall SCBA has some level of dirt and grim present.  The most common test failure is the remaining service life indicators.  These indicators usually are set above the maximum NIOSH requirement of 25% of cylinder pressure for restricted units or 27% for non-restricted units.
