The Self Contained Breathing Apparatus evaluations have been part of the respirator certification program since 1972.  In 1998 Congress included language in the fiscal year 1998 NIOSH budget to investigate fire fighter fatalities.  Currently NIOSH averages 7 Self Contained Breathing Apparatus investigations each year under the Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation Process.
