Under the Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation Process, there are two types of incidents that NIOSH will investigate.  Incident one is a traumatic injury sustained during the fighting of a fire or training exercise.  These type of incidents are investigated under the leadership of the Division of Safety Research.  Incident two is a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack that involves a fire fighter fighting at a fire or in a training exercise.   These events are investigated under the leadership of the Division of Surveillance, Hazard Evaluations and Field Studies.  If the SCBA is to be evaluated in the view of the incident investigators, the unit is sent to the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory for evaluation and possible testing.
