These fields are irrigated underground using pressure-driven hoses that dispense water and nutrients from computer-controlled tanks that you can barely see in the distance.  This is called fertigation.  The objective is to deliver just the water and nutrients needed and just when they’re needed, minimizing water use and nutrient pollution, as well as eliminating salt build-up from irrigation.
