Here’s what we will need to do in the 21st century to even begin to come close to the notion of sustainable agriculture.  We need to reduce agriculture’s ecological impact:  it’s pollution of air, land and water.  We need to reduce its demand for fresh water:  some 70-80% of fresh water is still used for farming.  We need to adapt staple crops to a hotter, drier world in many populous places.  And oh, by the way, we need to double the food supply over the next couple of decades.
