GSPIA to Host Virtual Event on the Military, Politics and the Upcoming Election

On Oct. 28 at noon, the Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Security Studies in the Graduate School for Public and International Affairs will host the virtual event “The Military in American Politics: The Election and What Comes After.” The event will feature a panel of civil-military experts discussing how the military’s reputation for being politically neutral is being challenged during the current election cycle.

“The United States military prides itself on being an apolitical institution dedicated to the preservation of national security,” reads a promotion for the event. “Its apolitical pretensions are increasingly difficult to maintain, however, as candidates for president court endorsements from veterans, servicemembers are increasingly politically active on social media, and extreme polarization and fears of post-election unrest have journalists and others asking military leaders whether they will play a role in securing the country after Nov. 3.”

This event will be hosted on Zoom; registration is required to access the event. For more information, email sjp89 [at] pitt.edu.
