Call for Nominations for Chancellor’s Distinguished Faculty Awards

The call for nominations for the annual Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching, Research and Public Service Awards is now open. The closing date for letters of nomination for all three awards is Friday, Oct. 16.

Awardees each receive $2,000 in cash, as well as a grant of $3,000 to further support their teaching, research or public service.

Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award

The Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes teaching excellence by up to five members of the University of Pittsburgh’s faculty annually. Any faculty member who has served full-time at the University of Pittsburgh for at least five years and not previously received the award is eligible.

Nominations for the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award should be sent electronically to Joseph McCarthy, vice provost for undergraduate studies, at jjmcc [at] pitt.edu and copied to Meghan Culpepper at MSC80 [at] pitt.edu.

Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award

The Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award annually recognizes up to six outstanding scholarly accomplishments of members of the University of Pittsburgh’s faculty, with three awards at each of two career stages.

Senior Scholar

Awardees in this category will have compiled a substantial and continuing record of outstanding research and scholarly activity. Nominees must have achieved preeminence in their field as evidenced in letters of support from national and international leaders in the field. Referees cannot be mentors or current colleagues of the nominees.

Junior Scholar

Awardees in this category will have demonstrated great potential as scholars as evidenced by the exceptional quality of their independent contributions and will have achieved national or international recognition. Eligibility for the Junior category will be extended to 13 years this year and next year in recognition of the professional impacts of COVID-19.

Nominations will be considered within three broad categories: arts, humanities, social sciences and related professions; science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and medicine and health sciences.

Chancellor’s Distinguished Public Service Award

The Chancellor’s Distinguished Public Service Award annually recognizes outstanding public service contributions by up to five members of the University of Pittsburgh’s faculty.

Public service is broadly defined as the use of University and academic resources to address social problems and to improve the general welfare of humankind. Knowledge arising from this work, ideally, should be disseminated through publications, such as documents, reports and papers; should be incorporated into the teaching and training of students wherever possible; and should have a long-term impact on the University and the community at-large.

Any full-time faculty member who has served for at least three years at the University of Pittsburgh is eligible to be nominated for a Chancellor’s Distinguished Public Service Award.
