Alumnus Tate Allen Yawitz earns Erasmus Mundus award, a first for Pitt

University of Pittsburgh alumnus Tate Allen Yawitz (A&S ’21) received the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship. This is the first time a student from the University received this award.

The Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Evolutionary Biology is a two-year program that will allow Yawitz to spend each semester at different European universities, while also having the option to finish his studies at Harvard University.

At Pitt, Yawitz double majored in biological sciences and philosophy while minoring in chemistry. His love for scientific research began in Assistant Professor Kevin Kohl’s lab where he researched how the environment impacts digestive physiology in rodents. As a sophomore, Yawitz won a National Science Foundation summer undergraduate research award to do scorpion research at the California Academy of Sciences.

He is currently a research and development scientist at a biopharmaceutical company where he designs experiments to characterize and identify applications for a novel anti-inflammatory drug.
