Full-time faculty, postdoctoral researchers and research associates at the University of Pittsburgh are invited to submit a one-page letter of intent for the 2024 Steven Manners Research Development Awards by March 4.

The University Center for Social and Urban Research (UCSUR) will award up to $20,000 to two promising projects in the social, behavioral and policy sciences on campus with the potential to lead to larger, externally funded projects. Submissions should also align with UCSUR’s mission of working collaborative to conduct interdisciplinary research that improves communities and addresses social, economic, health and policy issues.

Award funds should cover the direct costs of carrying out the research and may include the salary of a research assistant or graduate student, participant payments and other associated activities or costs. Applicants are encouraged, though not required, to consider use of UCSUR services, such as survey or ecological momentary assessment methods, qualitative audio and video transcription and coding, Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center resources, geographic information systems and gerontological research consultation.

Proposals will be evaluated based on scientific merit, the investigator’s background and experience, the adequacy of resources and environment, the appropriateness of the budget for the proposed work, likelihood that the pilot work will lead to subsequent external peer reviewed funding and relevance to UCSUR focus areas.

Applicants selected to submit a full proposal will be notified within two weeks. Final applications are due May 9. Awards will be made by July 1.

Submit letters of intent and applications to Anna Aivaliotis at annaca [at] pitt.edu. Send questions to Scott Beach at scottb [at] pitt.edu.
