On Oct. 25, the Pennsylvania Innocence Project will recognize its former and current volunteers and interns, including University of Pittsburgh students.

Since 2016, 54 Pitt students have volunteered with the nonprofit, which through legal and reentry services works to exonerate people who have been wrongfully convicted and help them transition to freedom.

The Pennsylvania Innocence Project has helped to exonerate 21 men and women over the last 13 years. The nonprofit also works to improve the criminal justice system to prevent more innocent people from being convicted.

The organization’s annual celebration is a continuation of the 10th annual Wrongful Conviction Day earlier in October; it’s theme this year was “Building a Legacy.”
