The eight functions listed in this slide summarize the strategic efforts of the Laboratory. Fatalities, injuries, and occupational diseases among the nation’s workers are substantially reduced with the use of PPE and PPT when other industrial hygiene safety and health practices are not possible or are insufficient to reduce workplace exposures to inhalation, dermal, and injury hazards. An estimated 20 million US workers use PPE on a regular basis for protection from job hazards. PPE protects workers from death, disabling injuries and illnesses as well as from exposure to environmental hazards such as certain airborne biological particles, chemical agents, splashes, noise exposures, fall hazards, head hazards, heat, and flames. Improvements and changes in PPT are realized through implementation of standards and regulations, revisions to existing standards, the availability of compliant PPE, and effective training, maintenance, and workplace programs and procedures for PPE use.
