The purpose and intent for NPPTL were defined in the congressional language that was used to establish the laboratory:  “… carry out research, testing and related activities aimed at protecting workers…” The current NPPTL MISSION statement was developed through a strategic planning process when the NIOSH Personal Protective Technology Cross Sector Program (PPT Program) was established. 

*PPT in this context encompasses topics and activities that address the technical methods, processes, technologies, tools and materials that support the development and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) worn by workers  to reduce the effects of their exposure to a hazard.
