Given that fish and shellfish each on average contain about 5% of fat by weight, as readily reflected in the data provided by the New York Seafood Council (Gall, 2004), this means that the daily fish diet of 142.4 g assumed by U.S. EPA (2000a) for subsistence fishers would contain about 7 g of fat (i.e., 5% of 142.4 g). This in turn implies that the daily intake of fat from the subsistence fisher diet alone is about 7 times less than that coming from the Codex standard meat diet (300 g muscle tissue, 100 g liver, 50 g kidney, 50 g fat, 100 g egg, and 1.5 liters of milk). Note that individuals consuming 142.4 g of fish a day is unlikely to additionally consume the fat portion of the Codex standard diet.
