These maximum residue limits (MRLs) are in parts per million (ppm; mg of contaminant per kg of fat), except for dioxins (PCDDs/PCDFs) for which the limits are in parts per trillion (ppt). Again (see notes page for last slide), the residue limits for dioxin mixtures were determined using a toxic equivalency (TEQ) scheme in which each compound in the mixture is attributed a specific (WHO-determined) toxic equivalency factor (TEF) in order to account for the degree of toxicity relative to that of 2,3,7,8-TCDD. Note that here the MRLs were determined on the basis of a standard fat intake of 50 g per day, and intended for fat concentration in meat other than mammals.
