Rates estimated per fish consumer are given by U.S. EPA (2000a) for several special groups in the United States. Note that a per capita rate of 6.5 g/day was used previously by U.S. EPA (1995) to guide the earlier version of U.S. FDA’s action levels. U.S. EPA (2000a) currently uses 17.5 g/day to set the screening values for recreational fishers and 142.4 g/day for subsistence fishers. U.S. EPA (2000a) is also aware that the daily consumption rates could be as high as 600 g per fish consumer for certain American Indian tribes (e.g., Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation; Harris and Harper, 2004, as so quoted in the U.S. EPA document).
