At the end of this session, students are expected to have a full appreciation of the several issues covered in this first half of the lecture. They should know that seafood, especially fish, is a global commodity of great nutritional values to mankind. They should understand that many fish are contaminated with POCs, which are highly toxic and bioaccumulative. Therefore, they should have some basic understanding of the tolerance levels or the maximum residue limits that have been set forth by various health regulatory authorities. In order to estimate (as well as to appreciate) the human health risk from consumption of fish contaminated with POCs, which is the main topic covered in Part II, students are also expected to be familiar with the fish consumption patterns occurring in various regions worldwide.
