These residue tolerance limits (e.g., extraneous residue limits and provisional maximum residue limits) are in parts per million (ppm; mg of contaminant per kg of fish flesh on wet weight basis). As stated earlier (Slide No. 15), extraneous residue limits is the term used specifically for pesticide residues arising from environmental sources other than the use of a pesticide directly or indirectly on food (FSANZ, 2006). In Japan, currently their residue tolerances are mostly available as provisional maximum residue limits and were relied heavily on U.S. FDA’s action levels. In India, the tolerances recommended by the Pesticides Manufacturers and Formulators Association of India (PMFAI, 2006) do not seem to be as binding or authoritative, in that the association is not a health (regulatory) agency.
