Before the discovery of effective anti-tuberculosis drugs, (R/) of TB was mainly symptomatic, with attention to lifestyle and advocating sun, light and air, as well as rest to the infected organ. Cases were treated at home, in sanatoria and / or in hospitals. Results of R/ were poor, only 25% of subjects with open TB had sputum conversion after 2- 6 mo. (months) of sanatorium R/. At 1 yr, 7% were still sputum positive. 50% of all new smear positive cases died within 5 years, the other 50% survived with varying degrees of morbidity.
