Sauerbruch’s thoracoplasty was an extensive operation with serious drawbacks. Plombage led to extensive complications. Apicolysis with resection of the first rib fared better. Even so, further developments followed. Appropriate anesthesia with endotracheal intubation, made lung surgery possible and proved of additional value in case of disease persistent to a lung segment / lobe.
