This is where we stand in terms of the guidelines right now. There are five modalities, or combinations of modalities, that one can use. One can do a fecal occult blood test, one can do a flexible sigmoidoscopy with a fecal occult blood test or alone, one can do a colonoscopy, one can do a barium enema. (I’m not going to talk about barium enema as it’s probably not a very good test. When stacked up against some of the others it really performs poorly.) If any of the lesser tests are positive, it’s advisable that you go on to a full colonoscopy.
