Myth: Respiratory protection is a minor concern when preparing for pandemic due to vaccines and other measures currently in place.

Fact: If the virus that causes a pandemic is a new variation that has mutated, there will be no pre-existing vaccine for that strain and the outbreak may be able to spread quickly before a vaccine can be devised. Vaccines cannot be produced until there are samples of the influenza strain available; vaccine production will lag the outbreak. Therefore, it is important that respirators are provided and used when it is determined to be appropriate.
