An accident follows from a particular combination of events resulting in a particular, unexpected and harmful consequence.Accidents do not “just happen” they are frequently predictable and preventable.

Thus accidents are more common where people are inexperienced, poorly trained, under pressure to work extra fast, cold, hungry and tired. In such situations safety precautions are not enforced, corners are cut and maintenance neglected.

Accidents should be fully reported and recorded. A serious accident may require a full inquiry with witnesses, expert reports and an inquest if deaths have occurred. More importantly the thorough and prompt investigation can inform a risk management strategy.

There may be claims against the firm and damages where safety practice has been unenforced. The individual worker may be compensated , if mutilated , crippled or traumatised under the Workmen’s Compensation legislation.
