Following injury, illness or accident then the worker may be helped best by retraining and rehabilitation . Retirement on medical grounds should not be the preferred option.

Rehabilitation will be both physical and mental in reskilling someone for a new job or even for rejoining the “world of work”.

The worker and his handicap need to be assessed by a skilled team of therapists-physiotherapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, ergonomist, physician against the proposed work. The gap in skills and training can then be identified and planned for. The worker and his family are part of the decisions to be made and after retraining there may need to be a lot of support and help while the person is applying for jobs.e.g letter writing and interviewing skills and practice.

If he/she returns to work in their old firm it may be important to continue to give help and support during the first few and often difficult weeks back at work. Confidence in oneself and one’s ability to do the job may be slow to be regained.
