Fewer of us work in large offices and factories, fewer commute to work into that community and that cameraderie of work. Instead we may be more often working in our own homes, often doing contract work for several different employers.

Service work dominates over manufacturing which can be one or two men supervising banks of machines. The scarcity for people skills-caring, nursing, counselling, policing……. is bemoaned; but this work is less attractive because of an image and often a reality of poor pay, unsociable conditions and low status.
