There is some evidence that the disparity in health status between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians has widened in recent years, although changes in patterns of identification make interpretation of trends difficult.

The lack of significant improvement in health status in Indigenous Australians is in stark contrast to improvements among indigenous people in New Zealand, Canada and the USA seen in earlier decades.
