Almost 25% of Indigenous males and 20% of Indigenous females are unemployed - more than double the figures for the Australian population in general.

Factors that are believed to contribute to the current poor employment levels among Indigenous people include: disappearance of employment in the primary and pastoral industries; a reluctance by non-indigenous employers to employ Indigenous people; and lower educational levels.
