Various measures of income demonstrate the disparity between the Indigenous and the general Australian population. For example, in 1996 the median income for people in the “prime working age” group was 40% less for the Indigenous than for the general Australian population. (ABS 1998)

Government payments are the main source of income for more than half of the Indigenous population. With current economic trends the prospects for Indigenous employment and income are unlikely to improve.
