There are marked disparities in the health status and in the key determinants of health between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian population. Addressing this disparity will require attention to the underlying determinants of health in addition to an improvement in services.

Examination of indigenous health programs overseas has identified a number of strategies which appear to be responsible for improvement in the health status of indigenous populations. These strategies are the subject of another lecture: “Strategies and approaches in Indigenous health”.
