Three common descriptive study designs are correlational studies, case reports, and cross-sectional studies. Well beyond the scope of this module, another well known kind of descriptive study is meta-analysis. A meta-analyst combines results from analytic studies that address a common research question using an identical research design. Meta-analysis, which can be embedded in systematic reviews of an epidemiologic research question and related investigations, is a highly salient tool of evidence-based medicine.
