At the core of the epidemiologic challenge to improve population health is the imperative to add life to years while simultaneously adding years to life. Life Expectancy as a measure only addresses life years or quantity of life. Health-adjusted Life Expectancy or Healthy Life Expectancy represents the new generation of public health measures that reflect the quality of life. It largely aims to take account of life years free of serious chronic morbidity. One measure of Healthy Life Expectancy combines mortality data with survey data on self-perceived health status.
