The role of any diagnostic strategy is thus two-fold:

1. To accurately identify patients who require anticoagulant therapy.

2. To exclude the disease, so that anticoagulants can be safely withheld.

An additional role is the identification of alternative diagnoses, which can explain the signs and symptoms.
