Compression ultrasonography has been shown to be effective for the identification of DVT. Furthermore, if this test remains normal over a period of 7-10 days, it is safe to withhold anticoagulant therapy.

In the diagnostic setting of PE, ultrasonography may be used to demonstrate the presence of VTE. There may be a role for repeated ultrasonography to replace pulmonary angiography, but further studies need to be performed to demonstrate the safety of this approach.
