A high probability lung scan, defined as one or more segmental or larger perfusion defects with locally normal ventilation, is correlated with PE in the vast majority of patients. Therefore, it is warranted to treat these patients with anticoagulants. An exception is a patient with a likelihood of another disease, such as a lung mass, which could account for a perfusion-ventilation mismatch.
