The cost-effectiveness of ultrasonography in the work-up of PE is in doubt. This is largely the result of the low sensitivity, resulting in a relative large number of false positive results. Thus, a certain level of over-treatment with anticoagulants will exist if one incorporates ultrasonography in these patients.
