There was a marked predominance of infectious and contagious illnesses and of nutritional disorders that caused diarrroea and other digestive problems which frequently resulted in death among breadfest infants and in those in their first year. Although on occasion these illnesses were atributed to the teething period, they were in fact the result of important deficiencies in the care of infants, particularly among the lower economic and social groups of the population.
