It was decided at the earlier stage that patients with hypertension in the study should be randomized either to intensive blood pressure control or to less tight control – around 1150 patints were, so, randomized. In those given intensive treatment the mean levels of blood pressure through the entire study were around 10 mm of mercury systolic and 5 mm mercury diastolic lower that those randomized to less intensive therapy. Levels of blood pressure were reasonably stable maintained through out entire period of follow up.
