Chronic infections account for 6% to 10% of all yearly infections (CDC, September, 2000).

Since 1982, a vaccine has been available to prevent HBV. For adults, the dosing schedule is two injections given 1 month apart and a third given 5 months after the second (ACIP).

It is important that pregnant women be screened for HBV and infants born to infected women be treated.
