Once people contract HIV they are infectious. There are usually no recognizable symptoms at this time.

AIDS or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome represents a late clinical stage infection with HIV. At this time a person may present with symptoms of opportunistic infections resulting from an impaired immune system.

Between 800,000 and 900,000 people are living with HIV in the United States. 400,000 Americans are estimated to contract the virus each year. Half of these infections are estimated to occur in people less than 25 years of age.
