In the U.S., 140,000 to 320,000 HBV infections occur each year. Of these, 70,000 to 160,000 occur symptomatically. On a yearly basis, 140 to 320 deaths occur as a result of symptomatic HBV.

Of all yearly infections, 8,000 to 32,000 are chronic infections, and 5,000 to 6,000 deaths occur annually from chronic liver disease including primary liver cancer (CDC, September, 2000).
