In fact the reduction observed in all cause mortality and of cardiovascular mortality resulted mainly from the 45% prevention of sudden cardiac death by the n-3 fatty acids. As in the much earlier trial by Burr in 1989, the benefit occurred early and resulted despite no change in the blood lipids. Also, as in the Burr study, no reduction in non-fatal myocardial infarctions occurred.
