As part of the medical examiner’s investigation, a probable cause of death is determined. That is, the injury or condition that most likely caused the death.

Among persons who died in the tornado, multiple injuries were the probable cause of death for one-half of the deaths, head injuries accounted for about one-fourth of the deaths, chest trauma 18%, and traumatic asphyxia accounted for 10% of the deaths.
