The vaccine for hepatitis B is 95-99% effective in young adults. If given over 3 doses (4-5 doses) then another 50% of those who did not respond may respond to the further doses. Therefore it may be prudent to test HCWs for protective serum titers after the three doses and then give further treatment if necessary. Those over age 40 are less likely to respond to the vaccine.
