After exposure the incubation period of hepatitis B is as long as 180 days. The virulence of hepatitis B is 67% with 1/3 having flu-like symptoms and 1/3 having jaundice. The rare patient has fulminent hepatitis and may die of their disease. After the acute phase 1-10% of those infected remain chronic carriers. The carriers are at increased risk of both chronic liver disease and liver cancer.
