Gloves can reduce the risk of exposure. In one study an infected dentist infected 6 of 395 patients using single gloves, but none of 369 patients after double gloving (Hadler SC et al Ann Int Med 1981;95:133) The blood contact is reduced as is the amount of fluid transmitted. Still this measure results in 3.5% blood contact in some operations.
