The nationwide screening program for gastric cancer has been done in Japan using the barium X-ray method since late 1960s. Three case-control studies in Japan showed a 40-60% decrease in mortality from gastric cancer associated with the screening; The reported decrease is probably overestimated because screenees are generally health-conscious. The primary prevention is more important as indicated by substantive declines of gastric cancer mortality in many countries in the world.
