Two major histologic types of gastric cancer are diffuse and intestinal types. The intestinal type is more frequent in males and at older ages while the diffuse type shows no difference between sexes and is more frequent at younger ages. Correa et al note that the intestinal type is predominant in high-risk areas. It is also argued that the intestinal type is more influenced by environmental factors. However, several studies have failed to find no difference in risk factors between diffuse and intestinal types.
