Adjusted rates are summary measures that account for differences in the composition of populations, permitting unbiased comparisons. However, they are fictitious rates, and their absolute magnitude depends on the standard population selected. The direct and indirect methods for adjusting rates are illustrated on slide 14 and slide 18 respectively.
